Mayberry Park residents unite to restore and maintain local parks

'Mayberry Park Matters' – this is the message residents in the area are sending out there and they are determined to keep their clean-up initiatives going.

When a community comes together and stands together, great things happen, and Mayberry Park residents are adamant that they will keep pushing to keep their suburb beautiful and clean.

This was proved with the recent park clean-ups in Mayberry Park when residents, out of frustration at not being able to use the parks, took matters into their own hands.

These efforts led to the establishment of the group called Mayberry Park Matters.

In July and August, funds were raised, and when they had enough, the clean-up of the park on Krinkhout and Besembos streets began. In two days, 160 bags were filled with grass and rubbish.

Fundraising to clean up the second park, on Yellowwood Street, then started. Once enough was raised, the community got together and, in another joint effort, they filled 260 bags with trash and grass.

“Ward councillor Samantha Nair and Michael Basch organised Mandla from Ekurhuleni to collect all the bags for us. We couldn’t have finished the job without his help. Sanele Garden Services, based in Mayberry Park, took on the project for us,” said Chantal le Roux, who spearheaded the initiative.

The group’s next goal is to start maintaining the parks on a monthly basis, and they are trying to raise the funds for that.

“It should cost us roughly R3 000 per park per month. If we can start small and have quick results, I hope that we can eventually have a bigger impact on our community,” le Roux said.

“We have started a Facebook page, Mayberry Park Matters, and any business that contributes to our projects gets a sponsor highlight post. Residents who want to get involved can either contact me via 082 828 4468 or make their contribution directly via the Yoco link we have set up,” Le Roux explained.
