UPDATE: Germiston Mortuary to release autopsy report after family waits 5 years
After waiting for more than five years, the De Abreu family has been told that the autopsy report into their mother’s death will finally be ready for collection on October 11.
The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed that the long-awaited post-mortem report into the death of Andeline Sybil will soon be finalised.
Motalatale Modiba, the department’s head of communication, explained that histology was performed due to a missing medical history at the time of the autopsy.
“The results of the histology have been received, and the doctor is currently reviewing the case. The post-mortem report will be ready for collection by the SAPS investigating officer on October 11,” Modiba said.
Sybil died in July 2020 following complications after heart surgery at the former Netcare Union Hospital. Her family has expressed frustration over the years of delays and the lack of communication from the mortuary.
“Why didn’t they contact us and ask for the medical history? This is just an excuse. If they had interviewed someone who operated at the time, they would have got more information,” said her daughter, Francesca Figueira.
The De Abreu family has been waiting since July 2020 for clarity on what caused the death of their wife, mother, and grandmother, and say they will only believe the findings once the report is physically in their hands.
The Alberton Record will continue to provide updates.
