WATCH: Man dies after being struck by truck while riding bicycle on Heidelberg Road

Traffic remains heavily backed up on Heidelberg Road after a man was struck and killed by a truck while riding his bicycle on Tuesday morning.

A man was killed after being struck by a truck while riding his bicycle along Heidelberg Road and Dekanah Street on Tuesday morning, October 14.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 07:00.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) responded to the scene, where the man was declared dead.

According to EMPD officer Amanda Sikhosana on site, the victim had no form of identification on him and has been recorded as an unknown male.

Officials were waiting for forensic services to arrive and remove the body.

The truck driver, Ishmael Motaung, told the Alberton Record that he was travelling along Heidelberg Road and Dekanah Street when other motorists stopped him.

“They told me I had hit someone. I didn’t see the person, and I didn’t feel it when it happened,” he said. “When I stopped and went back to check, I found the man lying there. He was already dead.”

The scene has caused significant traffic delays on Heidelberg Road and Dekel Street.

Motorists travelling to or from the N1, N12 and Alrode South are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes while authorities clear the scene.
