Update: Albertsdal teen fighting lupus still needs financial support
Despite previous fundraising efforts, Zoë Mukansi’s medical bill continues to rise as she awaits full medical aid coverage in 2026.
Nineteen-year-old Zoë Mukansi continues her courageous fight against lupus, the rare autoimmune disease that has drastically changed her teenage years.
Despite the outpouring of support during a community fundraiser at McDonald’s Alberton earlier this year, Zoë’s medical journey is far from over, and she still urgently needs financial help.
Her treatment and monitoring remain costly.
She requires weekly blood INR tests (R260 each), monthly medication (R6 622), and lab tests totalling R1 930, along with rheumatologist consultations at R1 500 per visit, depending on how stable her condition is.
Mukansi explained that the frequency of her consultations depends on the results of her blood work.
“If there are complications, I have to go monthly until things stabilise. When I’m doing better, it’s every three months.”
The family currently owes Netcare Milpark Hospital R30 462.96, where Zoë spent several months receiving life-saving treatment, including time in ICU, on life support, and on an ECMO machine after suffering multiple organ failure.
Although her medical aid will only begin covering treatment in 2026, Mukansi still needs urgent financial assistance to manage her ongoing care in the meantime.
