WATCH: Alberton police detain scholar transport drivers for allegedly drinking alcohol with learners
Authorities were alerted to the alleged drinking scene by members of the Greater Alberton Education Transport Co-operative Limited, after they spotted scholar transport drivers and school girls wearing uniform drinking inside a vehicle.
There was a heated moment just before midday on August 6 when angry members of the Greater Alberton Education Transport Co-operative Limited (GAETCOI) confronted scholar transport drivers and school girls wearing uniform for allegedly drinking alcohol.
The incident took place just before 12:00 (schooling hours) on the open space used by scholar transport drivers as a parking area, located between the Alberton Civic Centre and Ring Road East.
GAETCOI members found three adult males sitting in a minibus taxi with about 10 school girls, with one of the girls wearing civilian clothing. Alberton SAPS and EMPD were called to the scene.

The driver had just left the vehicle when authorities arrived on the scene.
“We found school girls inside this transport vehicle drinking alcohol during school hours. As an association, it is our responsibility to ensure learner safety from when the child leaves their house until they get back home.
“So we decided to call the police and the principal of the affected school. If we see similar behaviour from drivers and learners from other schools in Alberton, we will attend to those as well,” said GAETCOI’s Fikile Mogashoa.
The learners are understood to be from Parklands High School. A visibly upset Robert Brown (Parklands High principal) kept shouting at the scholar transport drivers: “You’re trying to impress 14-year-olds, for what? Why are you in the car with 14-year-olds?!” Brown demanded to know while the group were detained in a police vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle, officers found a crate of beer, a five-litre container of wine and plastic cups.
The vehicle’s owner was called to the scene, while the driver and the learners were taken to the Alberton Police Station.
