WATCH: Alberton High celebrates 50 years and welcomes its first female principal

Lizelle de Bruin is the school's fifth principal and the first female principal in the school's history.

Alberton High School marked a historic milestone on November 5, celebrating 50 years of excellence in education and the inauguration of its new principal, Lizelle de Bruin.

The event took place at the school’s Rec Centre from 18:30 to 22:00, drawing staff and members of the Department of Education.

The evening paid tribute to the school’s rich history and the visionary leaders who have shaped it over the decades.

“Alberton High has not only upheld its proud traditions but also evolved into a modern, dynamic institution where excellence is not just a goal, but a way of life,” said De Bruin during her speech.

She also honoured the leadership of outgoing principal, JS Olivier, who served from 2015 to 2024.

“He has been a mentor, a motivator, and a vital leader who inspired people, unlocked potential, and drove progress,” she added.

Under Oliver’s leadership, the school introduced digital technology in 2021, as well as agricultural and hospitality studies, cementing its status as a VOC school.

M Minnie, who has been associated with the school since its early days, reflected on its growth.

“When I joined the school in 1976, it was completely different. It had no sports fields, gardens, or a pavilion. Today, it has become the flagship school in Alberton,” he said.

The ceremony also highlighted de Bruin’s journey within the school.

Appointed as a post-level educator in 2007, she rose to departmental head of ICT in 2016, became deputy principal in 2021, and was appointed principal on November 1.

She holds a Master’s degree in Education and Management and is encouraged to pursue a PhD, which would make her the first principal at Alberton High with that distinction.

D Reddy, IDSO of Alberton High School, speaking at the event, praised de Bruin’s dedication and vision.

“I am confident that Lizelle will lead this institution to even greater heights. Once you have achieved that, Lizelle, you only have the world,” he said.

De Bruin, the first female principal in the school’s history, is married to Gerhhard.

Her appointment reflects a commitment to nurturing leadership, innovation, and a culture of care within Alberton High.
