Alberton High learners Raheem and Shaahed need funds for 2026 Academic Achievers Tour
Brothers Raheem and Shaahed Aziz from Alberton High School were selected for the 2026 UK Academic Achievers Tour, a prestigious opportunity recognising academic excellence, leadership and dedication.
Brothers Raheem and Shaahed Aziz of Alberton High School were selected to take part in the 2026 UK Academic Achievers Tour.
The tour recognises top-performing learners for their academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to personal growth.
For Shaahed, the news felt like the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
“From the time I was little, I always told my parents that I wanted to study internationally, and I had an affinity for the UK.
“Trying to describe how I felt when I heard the news and received the letter from my school would be an injustice – it felt like my prayers had been answered,” he said.
Raheem shared that he could not believe it at first.
“It felt like all the hard work, the late nights, and dedication had finally paid off. I received the letter first thing in the morning and could not concentrate on anything else for the rest of the day.
“All I wanted was to go home to break this wonderful news to my parents,” he said.
Recognised for excellence
Both brothers have excelled academically and in leadership.

Shaahed has earned multiple certificates of merit and served as a senior councillor and executive head of academics.
Raheem has also demonstrated strong academic performance and dedication, consistently striving to achieve his best.
“For me, being chosen as an academic achiever is both humbling and inspiring.
“It shows that the effort I put into my studies and personal growth has not gone unnoticed. It also reminds me that success isn’t just about marks; it’s about character, leadership, and using your talents to make a positive difference,” said Shaahed.
Raheem added that the selection meant more than just recognition.
“Being chosen as an academic achiever means more than just receiving recognition for my marks.
“It’s a reminder that hard work, consistency, and perseverance do pay off. I see this as both an honour and a responsibility to represent not just myself, but my school, teachers, family, and community.”
Inspired by world-class universities
The brothers said: “We can’t wait to experience the academic environments at Oxford and Cambridge, places that have shaped so many influential people in history.”
“Visiting those universities will remind me that no dream is too big, and that with hard work and focus, students from anywhere can achieve great things,” said Shaahed.
Raheem added, “I’m looking forward to seeing what makes world-renowned universities like Oxford and Cambridge so special. I want to experience the atmosphere of academic excellence and learn about their approach to teaching and research.”
Shaping their future
Both brothers believe the tour will influence their future academic and career paths.
“It’s a chance to develop skills like problem-solving, communication, and leadership. I hope to bring back everything I learn and use it to inspire others in my school and community,” said Shaahed.
Raheem said the experience would be life-changing.
“This tour could have an enormous impact on my future, dreams, and studies. Experiencing world-class universities and meeting other high-achieving students will open my eyes to new opportunities. I believe this experience will inspire me to set even higher goals for myself.”
Shared love of learning and travel
The decision to choose the UK Academic Achievers Tour was one the brothers made together.

“We chose the UK tour because it offers such an incredible mix of education, culture, and global exposure,” they said.
“We are also thrilled to visit Durham, which is famous as a filming location for Harry Potter. But what we are most excited about is the Paris extension; it’s a dream come true.”
Passion for medicine
Both brothers share a strong passion for medicine. Shaahed dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon, while Raheem hopes to pursue a career in cardiothoracic surgery.
“The brain is one of the most complex and fascinating organs, and I’m inspired by the challenge of understanding it and helping patients through surgical intervention,” said Shaahed.
Raheem added, “The heart fascinates me, and the idea of being able to save lives through surgery motivates me. I hope to learn from leading universities and use that knowledge to achieve my dream of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon.”
Motivated by family, friends, and mentors
The brothers credited their family, friends, and mentor, Ms Hibbert, for their success.
“Our friends inspire us daily through healthy competition and encouragement,” they said.
“Our biggest fan is Ms Hibbert, who has been an incredible mentor to us both. Her dedication and belief in us make us want to always reach higher and achieve the best we can.”
Community support and fundraising
The family, led by parents Shamima and Afzal, launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the R200 000 cost of the trip.
“When we heard that Raheem and Shaahed had been selected, we felt an overwhelming sense of pride and joy,” said the parents. This opportunity goes beyond the classroom; it will help them grow academically, culturally, and personally,” said the parents.
They are appealing to the community for support through their Brothers Beyond Borders fundraising initiative.
The family has already raised a portion of the funds and hopes to host raffles and small community events.

A journey that inspires others
For the family, this opportunity represents much more than travel.
“If Raheem and Shaahed could go on this tour, it would be a dream fulfilled. It would show that dedication, hard work, faith, and the support of our community can open doors that once seemed impossible. The community’s encouragement deeply touched us, and we are grateful to everyone who has supported our sons,” said Shamima and Afzal.
