Therapy dogs deliver comfort and cheer to young patients at Stepping Stone

Harvey and Bela’s visit to Stepping Stone Palliative Care Services brought comfort, smiles and much-needed emotional relief to children receiving palliative care.

A wave of warmth and happiness swept through the paediatric palliative care unit at Stepping Stone Palliative Care Services recently, when two gentle therapy dogs paid a special visit to children receiving care.

Animal lovers Stacey Souris and Rose Stafford brought their cherished companions, Harvey and Bela, to the Children’s Unit, where the friendly dogs offered cuddles, playtime and soothing companionship to the young patients.

The visit transformed the atmosphere in the ward, as laughter and smiles replaced moments of discomfort.

Nurses and caregivers noted a clear improvement in the children’s moods, underscoring the powerful emotional benefits of animal-assisted interactions.

For youngsters facing life-limiting conditions, these encounters provide more than simple enjoyment.

Rose explained that therapy animals can ease anxiety, divert attention from pain and provide a sense of unconditional comfort that is difficult to replicate in clinical settings.

The CEO and founder of the local Hospice, Tersia Burger, conveyed her sincere appreciation for the thoughtful gesture.

She said that they are incredibly grateful to Stacey and Rose for sharing Harvey and Bela with their precious children.

“Our patients endure challenging journeys, and moments of pure joy like this are invaluable. Seeing their faces brighten in the presence of these loving dogs was truly heart-warming,” Tersia said.

The organisation continues to welcome community support and encourages donations towards its children’s unit, adult unit and charity shop.
