Fatal crash on R59 in Alberton brings traffic to standstill

A fatal collision involving two vehicles on the R59 near the Delphinium Street bridge caused major traffic disruptions on Sunday morning, leaving one person dead and three others injured.

Motorists travelling along the R59 in Alberton experienced major delays on Sunday morning after a fatal crash brought traffic to a complete standstill.

Emergency teams from the City of Ekurhuleni’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) responded to the scene at about 10:00 on March 15 after receiving reports of a serious collision beneath the Delphinium Street bridge.

According to EMS spokesperson Tikkie MacDonald, the crash involved two passenger vehicles and resulted in multiple injuries.

“Upon arrival, rescue and fire crews identified a wreck involving two passenger vehicles. The high-impact collision resulted in several injuries and one confirmed death,” said MacDonald.

Paramedics treated three injured people at the scene before transporting them to different medical facilities for further treatment.

One person was sadly declared dead at the scene.

The deceased was later transported to the Germiston government mortuary by the Gauteng Forensic Pathology Services.

Traffic along the busy route was heavily affected as emergency teams worked to clear the scene and assist the injured.

The scene was later handed over to the EMPD freeway division, which is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Authorities indicated that a case of culpable homicide will be opened.

MacDonald urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during wet weather conditions.

“The City of Ekurhuleni strongly advises all drivers to maintain heightened vigilance and reduce speed when travelling in rainy conditions,” said MacDonald.

Residents are encouraged to report life-threatening situations or fire emergencies to the City of Ekurhuleni’s Emergency Management Services on 011 458 0911.
