Alberton residents feel the pressure as fuel set to increase in April
Motorists to face steep fuel price increases next month, with petrol 95 expected to reach over R24 per litre inland, as global oil prices surge and taxes rise
Alberton residents are notified that fuel prices are set to increase on April 1.
“Petrol 95 inland could reach R24.78 per litre, while diesel may rise above R25 per litre. Petrol 93 is also expected to increase, and paraffin will become significantly more expensive.”
The price rises are mainly because of higher global oil prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East. Attacks on Iran have disrupted oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for about 20% of the world’s oil.
On top of this, the South African government will add 21 cents per litre in fuel taxes. Unlike in 2022, when fuel levies were lowered to help motorists, there is no relief this time.
The rand has also weakened against the US dollar, making imported fuel more expensive. International oil prices are now around $106 per barrel, adding further pressure on local prices.
“Fuel price increases only make the poor poorer. When petrol goes up, food prices also rise, and it is the disadvantaged who suffer the most.
“The government does little to cushion the impact on their lives,” said local resident Phumlani Dywill.

“The increase in public transport fares will be a major challenge for those of us who travel frequently for work. However, we will have to accept the situation and continue working hard to make ends meet,” said Phuti Seboni.
“Fuel price increases place added pressure on every household, as they drive up not only transport costs but also the price of food and basic living. Many South Africans are already struggling to stay afloat, and this will only deepen the financial strain,” said Esmeralda Lombard.
“I don’t like it when fuel prices go up because it means I will have to spend more on transport,” said Mantsheke Pheko.
“The increases are staggering and will affect every part of daily life, from transport costs to groceries. It’s becoming a real struggle for everyone,” said local resident Bandile Gabuza.
“Most of us rely on taxis to get to work, school or the mall. When fuel prices increase, taxi associations are forced to adjust their fares just to keep operating. An extra R2 or R5 per trip might not seem like much, but over a month, it takes away money that could have been used for electricity or food,” said Sthembele Njobo.

Expected fuel prices for April (including 21c tax hike):
Inland:
Petrol 93: R24.27
Petrol 95: R24.78
Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): R25.78
Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): R25.96
Illuminating paraffin: R21.53
Coastal:
Petrol 93: R23.48
Petrol 95: R23.95
Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): R24.95
Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): R25.20

Motorists, including Alberton residents, should prepare for steeper fuel bills in April, as petrol, diesel, and paraffin prices rise.
