WAS Foundation appeals for winter donations at Alberton North drop-off point

As winter approaches, the WAS Foundation is appealing to Alberton residents to donate warm clothing and blankets, with the local drop-off point playing a vital role in supporting families in need.

With winter fast approaching, the WAS Foundation (We’re Against Starvation) is calling on the Alberton community to step up and support its winter drive by donating warm clothing, blankets and food for those in need.

The NPO was founded in 2009 by Esmarelda van Zyl, whose mission is to create a safe place for families and children.

Through the NPO, they also ensure that no one goes to bed hungry or cold and that people are treated with love and care.

The organisation operates soup kitchens in Stillbaai, Alberton and Krugersdorp, providing essential support to vulnerable communities.

Through its efforts, the foundation distributes over 10 000 cooked meals monthly and assists more than 3 500 children with school lunchboxes.

The foundation has also encouraged businesses to get involved, noting that a Section 18A certificate can be issued to companies that would like to make donations.

At the heart of the Alberton initiative is dedicated volunteer Christa Haumann, who has been serving the community for the past eight years. As the Alberton North drop-off point coordinator, she plays a key role in collecting and distributing donations to those who need them most.

“I cook for people living on the streets in Alberton every Sunday when we receive donations,” she said. “We are really struggling to get enough support, especially during this time.”

Christa also assists an old-age home in Vereeniging, ensuring that the elderly are not forgotten.

Beyond meals, the organisation runs upliftment projects including support for abused women and children, school shoes for kids, senior feeding schemes, winter blanket drives and general assistance to disadvantaged communities.

Residents are encouraged to donate items such as jackets, jerseys, blankets, shoes, and baby clothing. Every contribution, no matter how small, can help keep someone warm this winter.

“Anything that someone no longer needs can become a treasure for someone else,” Christa added.
