WATCH: SoHo Square opens its doors in Raceview with community-focused vision

A refurbished boutique retail hub just minutes from Newmarket is set to boost local business and bring fresh energy to Alberton’s growing community.

Residents, business owners and stakeholders gathered in Raceview on March 14 to celebrate the official launch of SoHo Square Newmarket, a newly refurbished boutique retail and office centre positioned to serve Alberton’s fast-growing suburbs.

Located along Jubili Street, just 1km from Town Square at Newmarket and Mall Newmarket, the upgraded centre has undergone a significant facelift, transforming it into what developers describe as a modern, accessible and community-driven destination.

The launch event drew a lively crowd, reflecting strong local interest in the development and its potential to revitalise the immediate area.

“The upgraded boutique centre blends established tenants with new businesses wanting to be part of this upmarket venue as a prime location,” said Danny Moulder, operator of Alberton Meat Market.

“Nestled just 1km from Town Square at Newmarket and Mall Newmarket, and near Alberton Hospital and lifestyle estates, SoHo Square is poised to become a vibrant community focal point in the rapidly expanding area.”

He added that the refurbishment focused on both aesthetics and functionality. “The refurbishment included a road-facing facelift and expanded tenant spaces, while preserving the legacy of its existing occupants.”

Among those legacy tenants is Alberton Meat Market, a long-standing local favourite.

“Established decades ago, it brings years of expertise, renowned for its unrivalled drywors, boerewors, pork sausages, and fresh and mature cuts crafted with family recipes combined with superior service,” Moulder explained.

Other familiar names at the centre include Paintalot Express, a hardware store that has served the community for more than 30 years.

The business continues to offer personalised service alongside its trusted range of Promac paints and hardware products.

Adding to the mix is ReeMicks Dance Studio, which has built a strong reputation since 2016. The studio has earned national recognition for achieving South Africa’s first official national colours for hip hop dance, and offers a range of classes from hip-hop to burlesque.

Fitness enthusiasts are also catered for, with Curves providing a women-focused 30-minute workout programme combining strength training, cardio and stretching.

Jenene Cronning, consultant to SoHo Square, highlighted the centre’s forward-looking vision and opportunities for further growth.

“SoHo Square’s vision extends beyond its current tenants, inviting new businesses to the three spaces that are still vacant on ground-level retail spaces; upper-level is already fully let,” she said.

“The centre’s strategic location near medical facilities and residential areas offers affordability and accessibility, and to complement the existing tenants, making it an ideal hub for a boutique retailer, biokineticist and coffee shop.”

She added that the development is about more than just retail. “The upgrade signals a commitment to quality, with plans for a community-driven space that fosters local commerce and employment.”

For prospective tenants, Cronning described the development as a strong opportunity.

“For tenants, the opportunity to secure a well-positioned space at competitive rates is a call to action, supported by the centre’s proximity to established infrastructure. The refurbishment, including modern finishes and illuminated signage, ensures SoHo Square stands out as a beacon of innovation.”

She encouraged interested parties to get involved. “We encourage business owners to explore leasing opportunities or visit the centre to experience the transformation firsthand.” With its blend of established favourites and new enterprises, SoHo Square is set to become a convenient, localised destination for Alberton residents and reinforcing the suburb’s steady growth and evolving lifestyle offering.
