WATCH: 2 men from Greenfields begin a 1,400km walk to fight unemployment

Two local men are walking 1,400km from Greenfields to Cape Town to raise funds for skills development and inspire change in communities affected by unemployment.

Two men from Greenfields, Zama Nobevu and Thokozani Basana, started their 1 400km walk to Cape Town on April 1.

Community members were invited to attend the official send-off at 09:00 at the Greenfields stop sign, where Zama and Thokozani began their inspiring journey to Cape Town.

The aim of the journey is to raise money to teach young people and adults practical skills so they can find work or start their own businesses and support themselves.

The walk builds on a previous campaign during October 2025, when the team walked approximately 700km from Greenfields to Durban.

Funds raised during that journey were used to purchase industrial sewing machines, which are now being used to train 70 young people and adults in sewing and manufacturing dishwashing products.

Due to increasing demand, the programme now needs more equipment. This has inspired Zama and Thokozani to take on an even bigger challenge, doubling the distance to 1 400km by walking to Cape Town. The journey is expected to take about 30 days.

“The reason for choosing Cape Town is to stretch the kilometres and show how dedicated we are to this project and the change we want to see,” said Zama.

Residents of Alberton and surrounding areas are encouraged to support the initiative and be part of the journey.

“We ask the community to walk with us and support us throughout this process, as this project could change many lives,” they said. They also expressed gratitude to the communities of Greenfields, Palm Ridge, Eden Park, Phola Park, Sky City and surrounding areas for their support and encouragement.

“I was deeply moved when I first read about the walk and later met Zama in person. What stood out to me was his determination to uplift his community and create opportunities for others. I could see the vision he had to bring people together and develop their skills,” said one of the supporters, Nirvaan Balwanth
Special thanks were extended to Eden Park Police Station, Ntshiza Security and Precious Funerals for providing an escort during the send-off from Greenfields to Sky City, as well as the community for generous donations.
