Young hockey player selected for Netherlands tour seeks support

Young hockey player Mieke van den Berg, who has been selected to represent South Africa is appealing for donations to support her upcoming tour.

Mieke van den Berg, a young hockey player, has been selected to represent South Africa in the Netherlands and is seeking financial support to cover the tour costs.

The tour, scheduled from September 28 to October 6, will see selected players travel to cities including Amsterdam, Laren, Leiden, Utrecht and Bilthoven. During the trip, players will receive world-class coaching, compete against international teams and experience European hockey culture firsthand.

Mieke’s hockey journey began at a young age.

“I started playing in Grade One and just enjoyed it with my friends. It was always fun,” said Mieke.

Her talent and dedication paid off when she was spotted by a scout at a school hockey festival in Merensky. She was then invited to join the international tour.

According to her father, André, the opportunity is about much more than just playing hockey.

“This tour gives players exposure to international coaches and high-level competition. They will also watch professional matches and learn how the game is played at the highest level,” said Andre.

What the tour includes:

• Two intensive coaching clinics with international coaches

• Three matches against leading Dutch hockey clubs

• Attendance at a professional Hoofdklasse hockey match

• Sightseeing excursions and cultural experiences

• Entry to Efteling Theme Park

• Visits to Amsterdam and Utrecht markets

• International return flights

• Daily breakfast and dinner

• Group transfers

• Travel and medical insurance

However, the total cost of the tour is R59 500, which covers all travel, training and related expenses. This amount excludes any personal expenses.

The Van den Berg family is now appealing to the community, local businesses and potential sponsors to help raise the funds needed.

“We are asking for any form of contribution. Every bit will help make this opportunity possible,” said André.

He added that supporters can contact him directly to arrange donations, whether financial, kit, or any other contribution. This ensures that all donations are properly managed and paid toward the tour.

“It will be very beneficial for me to gain more experience and be part of the hockey community. I’m really excited to learn and grow,” said Mieke.

Community members who would like to support Mieke can contact her father, André, on 082 619 1617 or email andrehvberg@gmail.com
