New manager steps in at Alberton Service Centre as Telana de Winnaar bids farewell
Alberton Service Centre welcomes new manager Krystle van der Berg, who aims to strengthen community support for the elderly.
The Alberton Service Centre has welcomed a new manager, Krystle van der Berg, as outgoing manager Telana de Winnaar takes on a new leadership role within a national organisation.
Van der Berg, who grew up in Alberton, said stepping into the role marks a significant shift in her career.
“I’ve been in a more corporate environment for quite some time. A few years ago, I started studying counselling because I was ready to move into something more meaningful. When this opportunity came up, I felt it was right up my alley, especially because I have an interest in people,” she said.
Getting to know the community
As she settles into her new position, Van der Berg said her immediate focus is on understanding both the role and the community she will serve.

“It’s quite different from the corporate world and comes with its own challenges, but it’s exciting because with every new opportunity, there is growth and learning. My priority is to get to know the community and the people we will be serving,” she said.
She acknowledged that working with the elderly will come with its own dynamics.
“Everyone is different, and it’s about embracing each person for who they are, respecting them and learning how they do things,” she said.
A vision to serve
Looking ahead, Van der Berg said her vision is simple but important.
“The goal is to continue serving the community. Many people feel lonely or don’t know where to go to get involved in programmes. This centre gives them a place to connect and be part of something,” she said.
She also called on the community to support the centre’s work.
“This is not something I can do alone. We need the community, businesses and individuals to open their hearts and work together so we can serve the elderly.”
Farewell to a familiar face
Outgoing manager Telana de Winnaar, who has led the centre for five years, is moving on to a new role as area director for Johannesburg at Meals on Wheels.
Looking back on her time at the centre, she expressed gratitude to the community.
“It has been a privilege to be part of the Alberton community. The support we received made a big difference,” she said.
She encouraged residents to continue supporting the centre.
“We are not doing this for ourselves. We are doing this for the elderly in the community. One of the things I’ve learned is ‘you share and we care’. If the community keeps sharing, we can continue caring for those in need.”
De Winnaar also thanked the Alberton Record for raising awareness about the centre’s work over the years.
