AfriForum Alberton steps in as second responders after R59 rollover and grass fire emergency

A rollover on the R59 North / Michelle offramp saw AfriForum Alberton members respond as second on scene, assisting an ejected driver, extinguishing a nearby grass fire, and supporting emergency services in a fast-moving multi-crisis incident.

On June 14, AfriForum Alberton members were called into action after a serious vehicle rollover on the R59 North (Michelle off-ramp), where a red VW had lost control and rolled off the embankment.

According to the team, “AfriForum Alberton members were the second responders on the scene after a driver in a red VW lost control on the R59 North / Michelle offramp and rolled off the embankment.”

Upon arrival, members immediately attended to the driver, who had been ejected from the vehicle. A quick assessment raised concern that he may have sustained possible spinal and neck injuries.

“Our members stabilised the scene and provided initial care until Netcare 911 and GPG paramedics arrived, took over, and transported the patient to hospital,” the team confirmed. As emergency personnel worked to stabilise the injured driver, the situation escalated further when a grass fire ignited and began spreading dangerously close to the crash site.

AfriForum Alberton members responded swiftly, deploying their mobile firefighting unit to extinguish the flames and prevent them from reaching both the patient and emergency crews. The team also assisted with traffic control, blocking off part of the roadway to ensure the safe recovery of the vehicle and uninterrupted access for emergency services.

AfriForum Alberton praised the coordinated effort on scene, stating: “Well done to the entire AfriForum Alberton team for your rapid response, professionalism, and willingness to step up in a difficult situation. This is what community safety looks like.”

The organisation also extended thanks to all role-players who attended the incident, including Netcare 911, GPG paramedics, and the Brackendowns CPF. “Thank you to Netcare 911, GPG, and Brackendowns CPF for attending the scene,” the statement read. AfriForum Alberton concluded with a message to residents: “Stay safe out there, Alberton.”
