Brown Farm community stands together against GBV

The Brown Farm community came together on August 25 for a Women’s Month Campaign hosted by Kliprivier SAPS and stakeholders, during which GBVF awareness was raised.

The campaign focused on educating and empowering residents while ensuring that victims and families know where to access help.

One of the key messages was the importance of empowering women through education and scarce skills.
Women and girls were encouraged to take advantage of skills development opportunities available through the municipality.

Ward councillors addressed the responsibility of families and communities in raising boys. They stressed that respect, consent and positive behaviour towards women must be taught from an early age.

The programme also allowed GBV survivors to share their stories. Their testimonies shed light on the impact of abuse while encouraging other victims to speak out, report abuse and seek support.

Agape Lerato’s social worker outlined services available to victims and their families, including counselling, shelter referrals, safety planning and assistance for children affected by violence.

SAPS members provided residents with information on reporting GBV, obtaining protection orders, the Domestic Violence Act, and the victim-friendly services available at the Kliprivier SAPS.

Pamphlets were handed out, and HIV testing was also available during the campaign.

The event was attended by community members across different age groups, as well as community leaders and service providers.

Residents welcomed the opportunity to engage directly with those responsible for providing support and protection.

Kliprivier SAPS said it remains committed to fighting GBVF and will continue working with stakeholders to create safer communities.
