N3 and N12 lanes closed after truck catches fire at Germiston interchange

Several lanes on the N3 and N12 are closed after an articulated truck jack-knifed and caught alight at the Elands Interchange in Germiston.

Several lanes on the N3 and N12 are currently closed following a truck fire at the Elands Interchange in Germiston.

The articulated truck has jack-knifed and caught alight on the N3 South and N12 West split.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi says firefighters from the Alberton and Germiston fire stations received the call at about 12:55 and responded to the scene.

“Scene and risk assessment was conducted,” Ntladi says.

All three westbound lanes of the N12 are temporarily closed while rescue and firefighting operations continue.

On the N3 southbound, three of the four lanes are also temporarily closed to traffic.

The truck’s only occupant, an adult male driver, has escaped with minor burn and trauma injuries.

“He is being transported by ambulance to the nearest medical facility in Alberton,” Ntladi says.

Firefighting operations are still ongoing.

Ntladi says the closure of both freeways is expected to continue until late this afternoon as scene rehabilitation is carried out.

Motorists are advised to avoid the affected area where possible and use alternative routes.
