“A Grade Three boy was allegedly injured while playing with friends on the field during break at Alberview Primary School. Consequently, paramedics rushed the child to a medical facility, and he was declared dead,” said GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona at the time. The GDE released another statement confirming that an investigation would be launched into the death.

The Mapheelle family held a press briefing on August 15 at their Monaheng home in Katlehong, where they detailed what happened on the day of Larona’s death.

According to a statement released by the Mapheelles at the time: “A call was made to Nyakallo Mapheelle about an accident at the school involving Larona, and she was told to rush there.

“A second call came while Tebello, his mother, and his grandfather were on the way to the school. They had to change direction because Larona was already admitted to the Netcare Alberton Hospital. Within three hours of the first call, Larona was dead.”

Investigators have interacted with the Mapheelles and the school. We are waiting for them to finalise the investigation. Once all processes are complete, the MEC will contact the affected family and the school.”
