Bad driving in Alberton

Residents have been complaining about safety on the road - one man tells all about his disappointment.

I have been a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists since 1972 and am horrified at the level of driving by drivers in and around Alberton.

The most common traffic offences that I observe on a daily basis are, the blatant disregard for traffic lights, you can observe them in your rear view mirror as you go through in amber. Not one or two but as many as five will drive through a red light.

You then get the non-stoppers at stop streets, those drivers who ride into the rear of your vehicle, should you dare to obey the law and stop, this now also applies to traffic lights.

Traffic circles: very few drivers understand the rule of traffic circles that is you give way to the right to all vehicles entering the circle to your right. This is not a four way stop where the first come first go (serve) rule applies and you all take your turn.

Next the cutting of corners, oh my word this is getting so bad you are even too scared to pull up at an intersection without having the front of your vehicle removed.

I have also noted with concern that fewer and fewer new models are equipped with indicators especially the more up market models are these perhaps optional extras now?

Finally to our dear Moms and Dads; yes, those of you who transport your children with no seat belts securing them or car seats for the toddlers. May God be with you when one day you are involved in a collision and they are flung through the windshield, oh, I nearly forgot to add the little ones who hang out the windows or stand between the two front seats.

Please take special note; I have not included the mobile phone users, texters and newspaper readers who are now such a common site they go unnoticed or the speeders that fly past you in a sixty or forty speed zone that you pull up next to at the following traffic light and of course, those of you who still think seat belts are just for show.

Keep up your bad driving habits … Kromvlei needs you.
