Alberton Rugby Club takes on UJ

Alberton won one game, while UJ took home four victories.

Alberton Rugby Club took on UJ on their home grounds on May 15.

The Alberton boys took on the strong university teams, and while their hearts were in the game, the results favoured the boys from UJ.

Five teams from Alberton took to the field and while the games were mostly close, only the third team overcame their opponents.

The end score in the game was 25-14 for Alberton.

“We are extremely happy with the win,” said third team coach Stephan Blignaut.

“It’s not every day you beat a university team. We are extremely proud of what our players achieved. I think we were more hungry for the win than the other team.”

The other results are as follows:

The u-21 team lost 62-0 to UJ and the u-19 team of UJ won 26-19. The second team’s match ended 37-8 to UJ.
The first team match played at the end of the day served for some compelling rugby.

The first half of the game saw a lot of back and forth between the teams, with both sides threatening the try line of their opponents.

UJ went over the line for points while Alberton fought back, scoring with the boot. In the second half, things swung in favour of the visitors with them quickly scoring against the defenders.

The match was interrupted in the final moments due to a power outage affecting the area. The match finished with 33-21 in favour of UJ.

“We are very happy with the way our team played,” said first team coach Francios Louw.

“The first half was very good and unfortunately our momentum was broken by two early tries in the second half. The power outage came at exactly the wrong time as we were regaining our momentum. This is a tough league and our players will have to be able to play a full 80 minutes of hard rugby.”
