Hayley Nieuwenhuys, a learner at Kenton Primary School, participated in her first school cross-country race on July 25, competing in the U11 category.
She delivered an outstanding performance, securing first place. This is an impressive start to her cross-country journey.
Hayley’s aftercare teacher, Gillian Farquharson, introduced her to running when she was nine after seeing her potential.
Farquharson, an athlete herself, played a pivotal role in nurturing Hayley’s interest in the sport.
At 11 years old, Hayley is already gaining recognition within the running community.
A focused and passionate young athlete, Hayley balances her academics, training, and competitive races with dedication and determination.
She trains daily under the guidance of her coach, André Venter, and actively takes part in both club and school cross-country events.
In addition to cross-country, she enjoys road running, frequently competing in 5km events.
In July, Hayley participated in two Discovery Vitality 5km road races.

On July 13, she competed in the Gerald Fox Memorial Race, finishing in 21:58 as the first female and fourth overall.
On July 27, she participated in the Randburg Harriers Challenge, finishing as the first female and second overall.
Beyond her racing achievements, Hayley shares a strong bond with her father, Dale Nieuwenhuys.
The two regularly run together with the PPT Socialrun group on Friday mornings at 04:45 in Meyersdal, starting from Plato Coffee Shop and completing a 5-6km loop alongside fellow early-morning runners.
Hayley’s love of running extends beyond competition. With unwavering encouragement from her parents and friends, who consistently support her at events, she continues to grow into a confident and capable young athlete.
When asked what running means to her, Hayley simply said, “When I run, I feel free.”
With a strong support system, natural talent, and a determined spirit, Hayley Nieuwenhuys is certainly a rising star to watch.
