Fortress Invitational prize fund surges to R2.5m with doubled Rookie of the Year bonus

Sunshine Tour and Fortress Real Estate Investments boost 2025 Fortress Invitational purse and double the Rookie of the Year award to R400,000, strengthening support for emerging South African golf talent.

The Sunshine Tour and Fortress Real Estate Investments have announced a major boost to the prize fund for the 2025 Fortress Invitational, along with a significant increase in the end-of-season bonus for the Fortress Rookie of the Year award.

This year’s Fortress Invitational, set for Glendower Golf Club from October 16–19, will see golfers compete for an impressive R2.5 million purse, R1 million more than when the tournament first teed off in 2022, marking the start of a valuable partnership with the Sunshine Tour.

The stakes are higher than ever for newcomers, too. The 2025 Fortress Rookie of the Year will take home R400,000, double the prize from last season.

“This year, the Fortress Invitational is #PoweringGrowth in South African golf at every level with an increased prize purse and a doubling of the Fortress Rookie of the Year prize in a continued show of our support for emerging talent,” said Steven Brown, CEO of Fortress Real Estate Investments.

“It’s all part of our commitment to growing the game, backing today’s top competitors, and paving the way for the future of South African golf on the Sunshine Tour.”

The announcement adds even more firepower to a Sunshine Tour calendar boasting over 30 tournaments and nearly R200 million in total prize money. The tour continues to open doors for professionals to secure playing privileges on the DP World Tour, the HotelPlanner Tour, and even exemptions into golf’s prestigious Majors.

“Fortress has been a valuable partner over the past four years,” said Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour. “We’re proud to confirm not only the continued support of the Fortress Invitational but also Fortress’s investment in our rising stars through the Rookie of the Year award. It’s a strong endorsement of our status as a tour of opportunity.”

The Fortress Invitational and Rookie of the Year award have been pivotal in shaping the careers of South Africa’s future golf stars. Robin Williams, for example, lifted the Fortress Invitational trophy in both 2023 and 2024, and claimed the Rookie of the Year title in the 2023/24 season, achievements that helped propel him from the Sunshine Tour to the DP World Tour.
