Local high school cricketers faced strong rivals in their opening fixtures.

Hoërskool Marais Viljoen High School’s cricketers started the season on a high note.

The school’s cricket season officially started on August 16, with matches for the U15 and first teams.

The U15 team faced Hoërskool Zwartkop (HZ), while the first team tested their strength against Midstream College (MC).

Results:

HS Viljoen first team vs MC:

MC batted first and scored 257/8 in their allotted 50 overs. Marais Viljoen comfortably passed the target with 258/4 in only 46.2 overs, winning by six wickets.

Standout batters:

Jaden Govender: 105 off 122 balls;

Ethan van Rooyen: 81 off 103 balls;

Abdullah Tadwala: 42 off 37 balls.

Bowlers:

Marco Hoffman: Seven overs, 39 runs, three wickets;

Jadon Pretorius: 10 overs, 35 runs, one wicket.

HS Viljoen U15 vs HZ:

HZ batted first and scored 248/8 in their 50 overs. HS Viljoen’s U15 team passed the target, finishing on 249/7 in just 35.4 overs to win by three wickets.

Standout batters:

Zaim Hashim: 46 off 43 balls;

Aron Craftsman: 43 off 30 balls;

Diwan Jansen: 40 off 31 balls.

Bowlers:

Warrick Hood: 6 innings, 19 runs, two wickets.

Uyjanda Ngqeleni: Four overs, 21 runs, two wickets;

Yureshen Chellan: Six overs, 37 runs, two wickets.
