Luan Jordaan (9) from Alberton wins Inland National Motocross title

After breaking his wrist earlier this year, nine-year-old Luan Jordaan from Laerskool Randhart made a powerful comeback to win the Inland National Motocross title.

At just nine years old, Luan Jordaan from Laerskool Randhart is already making his mark in the South African motocross scene.

Luan began his racing journey at the age of six and has since collected an impressive string of championship titles and accolades on the 50cc circuit.

This year, he advanced to the 65cc class, a major step up in both speed and competition.

The transition did not intimidate him. Instead, it revealed his growing confidence, control, and passion for the sport.

This year, Luan competed in three major championships: the Inland MX Championship, the Inland National Championship, and the Dragon NIMXC (Northern Interprovincial Motocross Championship). Although he fractured his wrist in March during the first lap of a race in Klerksdorp, he refused to give up.

“I knew that I needed the points for the championship, so I got up and completed the race, although I could not compete in the second heat of the day,” he explained.

A triumphant comeback

After recovering, Luan returned to the track more determined than ever. His comeback was nothing short of inspiring. On October 18, he claimed the Inland National Championship title and finished second overall in the NIMXC standings, an outstanding result considering he had missed a round due to injury.

“It felt exciting to win my first race this year. Being able to ride as fast as you can and the satisfaction of knowing you did your best is my favourite part about motocross,” he said.

How it all began

Motocross has been part of Luan’s life since he was six. He first rode as a weekend hobby and entered his first beginner race during the Covid-19 pandemic. His cousin, who also raced, introduced him to the sport and sparked the passion that would grow into a serious pursuit.

“My cousin is older than me and was riding motocross,” he said, recalling the early spark that started his journey. When asked who inspired him, Luan did not hesitate to name his personal hero: Ricky Raaf, who sadly passed away earlier this year while racing.

His favourite race so far has been at the TEZA track in Richards Bay, which he describes as a long and challenging course filled with hills and sandy sections, very different from the local tracks he usually rides. Luan dreams of racing internationally one day, especially in Europe, where many of the world’s top riders compete.

Family support and balance

Off the track, Luan enjoys fishing, boxing, and spending time with family and friends. He also balances schoolwork with training.

“He typically trains three times a week on the bike, but it depends on whether his schoolwork is up to date, as education is extremely important,” explained his father, Corne Jordaan.

His parents describe supporting him at races as a whirlwind of emotion, energy, and pride. They say their proudest moments often come from the toughest races, when Luan shows courage and perseverance rather than simply winning. They also acknowledge that motocross is an expensive sport, but they are grateful for support from FAST KTM, All About Racing (A.A.R), and CycleWorx Suspension.

Hopes for the future

Luan’s parents encourage him to stay motivated and always strive to improve. Their hope is that he will remain safe, continue to enjoy riding, and one day be selected to compete in the prestigious Motocross of Nations.
Win or lose, they celebrate and learn from every experience together as a family. Before each race, Luan follows a small routine with his parents: they share a special handshake, and he takes a quiet moment to pray at the starting gate.

Recognition and gratitude

Luan will be formally recognised at the Inland National Championship prize-giving ceremony on October 24. He extends his heartfelt gratitude to his sponsors and supporters, Ricky Raaff Racing, All About Racing (A.A.R), CycleWorx Suspension, and FAST KTM for their commitment and belief in him.
