Alberton’s Mzwandile Ashula excited to grow his athletics career after matric

Alberton Christian Academy learner and athlete Mzwandile Ashula is looking forward to varsity life, where he hopes to gain more opportunities and exposure to grow his athletics career while continuing his studies.

After years of balancing schoolbooks and athletics, Alberton Christian Academy learner Mzwandile Ashula is ready to take his next big step.

The athlete, who recently competed at the SACSSA National Athletics Championships in Pietermaritzburg, celebrated his matric farewell on October 3 and is now focused on completing his final exams and preparing for university.

“It feels like freedom, but is also a bit scary,” said Mzwandile.

“I’m ready to move forward and focus on what’s next.”

For Ashula, the excitement lies in knowing that varsity will bring both academic growth and sporting opportunities.

He plans to study sports management, a course that will allow him to stay connected to athletics after his competitive career ends.

“When I retire from athletics, I can coach and guide young athletes who have the same passion I do,” he said.

A journey of discipline and determination

He trains daily while keeping up with his academic responsibilities, often starting his mornings early with a tutoring session before school.

“It is not easy to balance everything, but I try to stay consistent,” he said.

“My mom pushes me to study, especially this final stretch before exams.”

When asked what keeps him motivated, Mzwandile said he constantly reminds himself of his goals.

“I think about how far I’ve come and where I want to be. I don’t want to stay stuck in the same place. I want to build something with my talent and prove that hard work means something.”

Looking forward to new opportunities

Competing at a higher level and training with more experienced athletes will give him the exposure he needs to reach his full potential.

Beyond his personal goals, Mzwandile hopes to use his education and experience to uplift others.

“I want to use what I learn to help train and develop athletes who come from the same background as me. To show them that it’s possible to make something of yourself through sport,” he said.

A new chapter with Virgin Active

Mzwandile has also been offered an opportunity to work with Virgin Active in Elandspark, where he will gain valuable experience in the fitness and wellness industry.

Under the guidance of qualified trainers, he will assist gym members with personalised training sessions, nutrition guidance, and one-on-one coaching.

Gratitude and advice for others

Mzwandile remains grateful for the support of his teachers, principal, and family throughout his journey.

“My teachers and principal always cheer me on before competitions, and my mom is always there to make sure I don’t lose focus,” he said.

His message to other learners who dream of succeeding in both academics and sport is one of discipline and patience.

“Stay focused and don’t compare yourself to others,” he advised. Everyone’s journey moves at a different pace. Keep working hard, and it will pay off.”

As Mzwandile prepares to close his high school chapter, his excitement for the future is clear.

“I’m excited about what’s coming. I know varsity will open doors for me, and I cannot wait to see how far athletics will take me,” he said.
