Golden City Rollers to host roller derby open day in Johannesburg

The Golden City Rollers will welcome the public to a roller derby open day in Turffontein, allowing newcomers to learn about the sport and join the league.

Johannesburg’s premier roller derby league, Golden City Rollers, is inviting the public to experience the speed, strategy, and physical intensity of the sport at an open day aimed at recruiting new skaters, referees, and non-skating officials.

The open day will be hosted at the União Portuguesa Hall in Turffontein and is designed to introduce newcomers to roller derby, one of the world’s fastest-growing contact sports.

The event is open to anyone aged 18 and older who is seeking a challenging, competitive alternative to traditional fitness routines.

Played on quad roller skates, the roller derby combines explosive speed, strength, endurance, and tactical awareness.

Often compared to rugby on wheels, the sport requires athletes to think quickly while enduring intense physical contact.

No previous skating experience is required to join the league, although participants should be prepared for a demanding and high-energy environment.

Attendees can look forward to a live exhibition game showcasing the pace and power of the sport, an information session about the league and how it operates, and an opportunity to try skating on the day.

Loaner gear will be available for those who wish to participate.

Golden City Rollers is currently recruiting in three key areas.

Skaters are welcome from all athletic backgrounds, with full coaching and structured training provided from the beginner level.

They need referees to skate alongside games, enforce rules, and ensure fair play, with no physical contact involved and full training offered.

Non-skating officials are also essential to the sport, handling scorekeeping, penalties, timing, and game logistics without needing to skate.

League president Dianne Silva, known on track as DiFibrillator, said the sport attracts people who were searching for a serious athletic challenge.

“Roller derby isn’t just about fitness; it’s about resilience, teamwork, and mental toughness. It’s incredibly demanding, but also one of the most rewarding sports you can commit to,” she said.
