Eden Park boxers crowned Ekurhuleni champions, set sights on Gauteng showdown

Eden Park boxing celebrates a historic moment as three local fighters qualify for Gauteng Championships after dominant performances in Alberton.

Eden Park’s boxing community is celebrating a landmark achievement after three of its rising stars were crowned 2026 Ekurhuleni champions, earning the right to represent the district at the upcoming Gauteng Championships in Sedibeng this May.

The victories follow a string of strong performances, including a decisive showing at a recent tournament hosted in Alberton.

Standout boxers Anathi Khonzani and Mlondolozi Poma led the charge, showcasing discipline and determination to secure their provincial spots.

The final piece of the puzzle came on Saturday, April 11, at the Bert Collins Boxing Club, where Eden Park’s three-time Ekurhuleni champion, Rhuwayden Olifant, stepped into the ring to defend his title in the 51kg division.

In a highly anticipated bout, he faced his close friend and rival Theo Fourie from Reiger Park. Despite the friendly rivalry, both fighters delivered a competitive contest, with the Eden Park boxer ultimately retaining his title in style.
Eden Park Boxing Club chairman Sydney Kok described the achievement as a proud and historic moment for the club.

“This is the first time in our history that three boxers from Eden Park will represent us at the Gauteng Championships,” said Kok. “Boxing in Eden Park dates back to the 1980s, started by the late Ashley Khan and Abraham Cornilus. To see how far we’ve come is truly special.”

Kok credited the fighters’ success to their unwavering discipline and commitment.

“These boys have shown that through hard work, discipline and faith, anything is possible. We are incredibly proud of them and the way they represent our community,” he added.

With the Gauteng Championships around the corner, the Eden Park trio now shifts focus to the next challenge on what Kok describes as the “road to Cape Town” for the South African championships.

Local supporters will no doubt be rallying behind their champions as they carry the hopes of Eden Park into the provincial arena.
