Young Alberton baseball player steps up for Gauteng at nationals
Hoërskool Alberton learner Liam Bester is making his mark on the baseball field after representing Gauteng at the recent national tournament.
At just 14 years old, Liam Bester is already showing signs of a promising future in baseball after being selected to represent Gauteng at the recent national tournament held in Boksburg.
The Grade 9 learner at Hoërskool Alberton began his baseball journey in 2021, driven by a desire to try something different.
“I wanted to try something unique,” he said.
His passion for the sport was sparked at a young age after watching The Sandlot, a moment that left a lasting impression and ignited his curiosity about baseball.
Inspired by legendary player Babe Ruth, Liam quickly developed a deep love for the game.
Now playing as an outfielder, pitcher and designated hitter, Liam is known for his strength as a batter.
“Being able to hit a home run and striking out a really good batter when I am pitching is what I enjoy most,” he said.
His hard work paid off when he earned selection to the U15C Gauteng team.
“It was a huge honour to be selected to represent Gauteng,” he said.

Reflecting on the national tournament, Liam described the experience as both challenging and rewarding.
“Being able to play with such a diverse variety of players from all over the country was the highlight of the tournament,” he said.
One of his standout moments was hitting a triple on the final day of the competition.
Despite facing tough opposition from other teams, Liam said the experience strengthened him as a player.
“The tournament was tough. We played against very strong teams from Cape Town, Limpopo and Mandela Bay. We felt every loss, but we showed up as a team every day and made it count,” he said.
Off the field, balancing school and sport has not always been easy, but he credits his support system.
“With the continued support of my parents, I have been able to manage school and sport,” he said.
Liam’s mother said his journey has been one of dedication and perseverance from the very beginning.

“Baseball has taught Liam discipline and patience, but most importantly perseverance,” she said.
She added that the family has fully committed to supporting his passion.
“Baseball is a lifestyle. There is lots of travel and long days on the field. Weekdays and weekends are packed with training and games,” she said.
Liam currently trains three times a week and plays for the Edenvale Giants under coach Ken Tsai.
He also credits his Gauteng coach Kyle Edwards for his development.
“We are extremely proud of him,” she said, speaking about his provincial selection.
Although his team did not take home the trophy, the experience was still a victory in itself.
“Seeing the pride, he had after the tournament was a bigger win than any medal,” she said.
Looking ahead, Liam has clear ambitions.
“It is my life goal to represent my country one day,” he said.
