Alberton wrestlers set for African Championships in Egypt
Alberton wrestlers Vincent Craukamp and Shiloh Cantor will compete against top athletes from across the continent at the upcoming African Championships in Alexandria.
Two athletes from Alberton Wrestling Club are set to represent South Africa at the upcoming African Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, from April 27 to May 2.
Vincent Craukamp and Shiloh Cantor have both earned their place on the national team after competing in the national trials, marking a major breakthrough in their wrestling journeys.
Vincent, who began wrestling in 2016, said his motivation has always been to become the best version of himself.
“It was tough, but I always tried to have fun. Representing South Africa means I’m getting closer to being the best I can be,” he said.
Since qualifying, he has committed to daily training, focusing on improving his ability to act decisively during matches.
“One of the toughest challenges I’ve faced is not giving up when people don’t notice me and my talent. I deal with pressure by placing my stress on God’s shoulders,” he said.
He added that his goal is clear: “To get gold and move forward in my career.”
Shiloh, who started wrestling at the club about three years ago, said the sport quickly became more than just a way to stay fit.
“What made me take it seriously was the mental game. You learn, lose, win and conquer so much more than just a match,” she said.
Her journey has been marked by resilience, including maintaining a two-year streak of not being pinned early in her career.
“The first time I was pinned, I told myself this is where the stronger journey begins,” she said.
Shiloh admitted that overcoming nerves has been one of her biggest challenges, but said she has learned to push through self-doubt.
“A person can never know the outcome of a match, so why doubt yourself before? That mindset has pulled me through a lot.”
She hopes to make her coaches, family and country proud, with her sights also set on gold.
Coach Richard Adinall said both athletes have shown exceptional growth and consistency.
“What sets them apart is their consistency in training and their ability to apply techniques under pressure,” he said.
Richard described Vincent as unpredictable on the mat.
“If you wrestle Vincent, you should expect the unexpected. He can execute techniques from positions you wouldn’t anticipate.”
He added that Shiloh brings determination and a strong mindset to her matches.
“She has a lot of heart. She’s tough, tenacious, and very coachable. She learns every time she steps onto the mat.”
Both athletes have faced setbacks, including injuries and losses, but have continued to push forward.
“They got back on the mat and worked even harder,” said Richard.
“This is a tremendous honour for us as a club and a great source of inspiration for younger wrestlers who look up to them.”
With competitors expected from up to 27 African countries, the championships will test the athletes against some of the best on the continent.
Despite the challenge ahead, both wrestlers remain focused.
“I expect they will do their best, leave everything on the mat, and enjoy the experience,” Richard said.
