WATCH: Alberton’s Rovers U6 soccer team challenges Bundas in its debute match
The players, coaching and management staff, and spectators all field the soccer pitch for a pre-game workout session before kick-off.
Alberton’s Rovers Football Club’s U6 team played its debut match against Bundas FC on May 16.
Hosted at the Rovers’ home ground on Letaba Street, the match saw supporters gather to cheer on their respective teams.
“We are here to play our first league game for the Eastern Leagues, and our kids are very nervous and excited for their first game. This team is made up of young ones, and it is the first time that they have been introduced to soccer.
“It is also their first match playing against opponents. I hope we do well,” said Mariam Patel (Rovers’ team manager for the U6 division) during a pre-match interview with the Alberton Record.
The players, coaching and management staff filled the soccer pitch for a pre-game workout session before kick-off, while spectators cheered players on. It proved to be a difficult debut match for Rovers, after they were thrashed 9-0 by the visitors, Bundas. The visitors dominated the game against the Alberton side.

During a post-match interview, Patel said: “It is important to note that our L1 team is made up primarily of four and five-year-olds, with some children who only started this year at the age of three. They played valiantly against far more seasoned five-year-olds, while showing incredible courage. For many of them, this has been their first introduction to the game. They will improve with more matches and game time.”
