Alberton High School to host junior touch rugby championships

Sports fans and families in Alberton and surrounding areas are invited to witness some of South Africa’s most promising young touch rugby players in action when Alberton High School hosts the junior Inter-Provincial Tournament from September 26 to 28.

The tournament will run from 07:00 until approximately 18:15 each day and will bring together about 82 teams.

Teams representing provinces and regions including Gauteng, Western Cape, Boland, and KwaZulu-Natal will compete in boys’ and girls’ divisions from U13 through to U19.

Four fields will be used at Alberton High School, with a further two fields at nearby Alberview Primary School to accommodate the large number of fixtures.

The tournament is being hosted in partnership with the South African Touch Rugby Association and will serve as the national championships, with teams competing for national titles in their respective divisions.

For the young players, however, the tournament will offer more than just the chance to compete for silverware.

Selectors will be at the championships to identify players for South African junior squads ahead of the Atlantic Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Ireland between July and August 2027.

According to organisers, players selected for the national squads could have the opportunity to represent South Africa internationally, with each team potentially consisting of 16 players and two coaches.

Teams are expected to play approximately two to three matches per day, while the final day will feature semi-finals, finals and play-off matches.

Entry to the tournament is free.

Visitors will also be able to purchase food and refreshments from vendors at the venues while watching the matches.

Organisers believe hosting an event of this scale in Alberton is a positive opportunity for the community and for the development of young athletes.

Residents are encouraged to come out, support the players and experience junior touch rugby on their doorstep.
