Southern Stars senior reserve claims back-to-back titles in outstanding winter season
With two senior trophies secured and fresh junior talent stepping up, Southern Stars Baseball reflects on a standout winter season as focus shifts to the diamond.
As the winter season comes to a close, Southern Stars Baseball is looking back on a campaign defined by grit, growth, and remarkable achievements across all its senior teams.
At the start of the Gauteng Senior Reserve League, the senior reserve side set out with one clear goal: win the league. Achieving that target was anything but simple.
The team faced a challenging road filled with logistical hurdles, including players travelling overseas and the integration of fresh talent promoted from its U15 and U19 junior ranks.
Graduating junior players into senior baseball is always a proud milestone for the club, but bringing together a mix of seasoned veterans and young newcomers took time. Gelling as a cohesive unit required patience, hard work, and determination.
The team’s relentless effort paid off in full. Not only did they clinch the league title, but they also battled their way to the cup final held in Boksburg. Facing early pressure, the Stars found themselves trailing early in the final.
Demonstrating true championship character, the squad dug deep, mounted an electric comeback, and powered through to a definitive 9-4 victory.
With this result, Southern Stars is officially back-to-back cup champions in the Gauteng Senior Reserve League.
Awards and team depth
A massive special mention goes to Armstrong Ogwuche, who was awarded Best Pitcher in Gauteng for thE league.
Ogwuche was a cornerstone of the club’s success on the mound, and the team is grateful to have had him competing in its colours this season.
With two trophies locked in the cabinet, this team is hungry and ready for new challenges in the upcoming season.
The club’s strength lies in its depth, and two other senior teams represented Stars Baseball with pride throughout the winter campaign.
Playing with passion and heart, the ladies team navigated the ups and downs of a tough season. Through every inning, their sportsmanship and collective spirit highlighted what true teamwork looks like.
Designed as a crucial stepping stone for new players to learn alongside experienced hands, the development senior reserve squad made incredible strides.
Every player earned valuable game time, honed their skills, and gained essential experience for the future.

“Trophies are won on the field, but championships are built behind the scenes. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to our coaches, management, and support staff for their tireless dedication, organisation, and guidance throughout the winter season,” said Shaun Niemand from the club.
“To our community and supporters, thank you for cheering us on through every pitch and rally – we couldn’t do this without you. Finally, to our players: thank you for your unwavering commitment, for showing up to cold winter practices, and for giving your all every game day.”
“As we close the chapter on a triumphant winter, our focus turns to the diamond once again. The junior season is officially here, and we cannot wait to see what our young Stars accomplish next,” Niemand said.
