Prioritise safety this Women’s Month
All sectors of our South African society is affected by crime, but it is a certain fact that fear of crime, and vulnerability of crime committed against them, are felt much more by women.
Although this feeling of fear is based on the harsh realities of statistics of crimes committed against women, this fear can be addressed to some extent by exercising basic safety principles and by remaining vigilant at all times.
Women all over South Africa should be reminded of general safety tips, and Women’s Month is a great month to raise awareness for all women across South Africa.
- Be accountable about your whereabouts to a friend or a loved one at all times, so they can check up on you to assure you have arrived safely at your destination and at home.
- Look into installing software on your phone, so that, in case something happens to you, a loved one can trace your whereabouts through the app on your phone. Look into other safety apps, such as panic button apps.
- Always be aware of your surroundings and always follow your gut, if a situation seems unsafe, rather keep yourself out of it or ask someone to accompany you, especially when it involves driving at night.
- Remain alert of any suspicious individuals at shopping malls, parking garages and ATMs. Avoid dark and deserted places, especially at night.
- When driving at night and even during the day remember to keep your doors locked and windows closed. Be aware of your surroundings and always leave enough space between you and the car in front of you at traffic lights should you need to get away.
- Keep your handbag and any other valuables in the boot of your car and keep your cellphone out of sight.
- Avoid anything, like messaging or making phone calls that are not related to emergencies, while driving that may distract you from your surroundings.
- When arriving home make sure that there are not suspicious vehicles or individuals hanging around.
