Themed ‘Taking netball in Africa to a whole new level’, the Gauteng leg of the trophy tour will make stops in all five regions of the province, which has become popularly known as the ‘Home of Champions’.

During the tour, the trophy will make its way to various communities throughout the province, including townships, informal settlements and hostels along with various other areas.

The trophy will arrive in the province with a stop at Sedibeng on May 30 and then travel to Johannesburg the following day, the West Rand on June 1, Tshwane on June 2, and ending off in Ekurhuleni on June 3.

During the travel, among others it will be presented to the executive mayors in the various municipalities, the Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, and while in Tshwane, it will also make a stop at the Union Buildings.

Celebrating the Netball World Cup that will take place on the African continent for the first in Cape Town from July 28 to August 6 this year, the trophy tour will drum up support from Gauteng citizens to rally behind SPAR Proteas netball team who will be representing Mzansi.

“It is of the utmost that we all come together to ensure the success of the Netball World Cup as it is hosted in our beloved country. Netball is a major sporting code for women globally and will contribute immensely towards the development of women in the sport.

“As a world-class hosting province and home of sporting and artistic excellence. Gauteng is thrilled to have the trophy among its people. We hope this will add to inspiring the team to go all the way knowing that South Africans have already laid their hands on it.

“We are sending at least 150 young voices from various Gauteng schools to back the team and show support for the tournament,” said Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Morakane Mosupyoe, urging the province’s people to nail their loyalty to the mast for the team.
