City extends deadline for comments on framework review

We have already had engagements with councillors and now it is time to engage with the residents, says Cllr Echeozonjoku.

Residents of Alexandra and other stakeholders in the township still have time to comment on the City of Johannesburg’s proposed Spatial Development Framework.

The framework was advertised for public comment as of December 22 last year, with the closing date set for April 22 but this has been extended to May 11 in a bid to solicit more comments on the project.

The project was adopted by the council in 2016, and the city is currently reviewing it in line with the Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act 16 of 2013, which requires that municipalities update their frameworks every five years.

The current framework aims to address the spatial inequalities, and jobs-housing mismatch in the city, and as part of this public participation process, the City will hold several sessions regionally with the public.

The City has urged all its residents to participate in the sessions as comments from the public made during these sessions will be integrated into the review process.

The MMC for Development Planning Belinda Echeozonjoku has reiterated the City’s commitment to being an ‘inclusive city’ and bringing the framework review process to the residents of Joburg so that they could be part of the City’s efforts in shaping the spatial landscape of the city in an orderly manner.

“We have already had engagements with our councillors on the framework review process, and now it is time to engage with the residents of the city. We hope that public input into this process will assist in strengthening the City’s transformation agenda,” Echeozonjoku said.

The Region E sessions for comment on the framework will be held at a Microsoft Teams meeting on May 9 from 09:30 to 11:30.
