Alex man dies in house fire

The City of Johannesburg's Emergency Management Services (EMS) responded to a fire incident in Alexandra only to find that a 67-year-old man had died as a result of the house fire.

An elderly resident of Alexandra died as a result of a fire on June 11 at about 18:50.

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) firefighters that responded to the incident said upon arrival, they discovered that a man believed to be 67 years old had succumbed to his injuries.

As the man was alone in the house at the time, the firefighters contacted the City’s Disaster Management, SASSA and the City’s Department of Social Development to intervene.

EMS media liaison officer Xolile Khumalo said the fire was suspected to have resulted from an unstable candle. Members of the Alex SAPS were called to the scene to conduct further investigation.

Khumalo urged residents to be extra cautious when using candles, various lighting sources, and electrical appliances, saying residents must never leave such items unattended. Electrical appliances should be switched off during load-shedding to avoid fire incidents, he added.

At the time of going to press, relatives of the deceased had not been traced.
