Minerva Secondary School hosted a multi-sports event at its annual Grade 10 sports day.
On most occasions schools’ sports events in townships are dominated by soccer and netball, and occasionally cricket or a bit of rugby features.
The event, which was conducted at Three Square Sports Complex and attended by 500 Grade 10 students, was organised in partnership with accounting firm, Ernst & Young. The sports activities included two-legged relays, egg races, balloon popping games, tyre races, basketball and also dance. The games were facilitated by teachers and the firm’s new employees as part of their induction into the company’s corporate social responsibility work. The students actively engaged in all codes and the winners were rewarded with gifts, while all participants received refreshments and meals.

The head of the life orientation department, Thulasizwe Hlatswayo, said the partnership has been going on for many years and included other educational areas, but sports was a key component as it impacted directly on each individual child.
“It stimulates their physical and mental growth and teaches them teamwork, co-ordination and resilience,” he said.
Abby Thompson of the firm said it was a privilege for her team to engage with the students.
“It is part of giving back to the school and benefits the totality of the students’ education. Play and any physical activities are integral parts of learning through discovery,” she said.

Linda Mmutle, a teacher at the school, stated that the annual event was part of the school’s life orientation class and children looked forward to it. “It exposes them to new sports activities, which some could nurture as future pursuits,” she said.
