Police launch murder investigation after taxi industry peacemaker’s fatal shooting

Police are hunting for suspects who shot and killed Santaco Gauteng discipline chief Jabulani Ntshangase at a Marlboro Sasol garage as he waited for his bodyguards.

Police have launched a murder investigation, working to trace and apprehend two armed suspects who shot and killed Jabulani Ntshangase.
The provincial head of discipline for the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Gauteng was shot and killed at a Sasol garage on Marlboro Drive on July 31. Police spokesperson in the Johannesburg District Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhane confirmed, on Monday, that a man was shot and killed by two armed suspects while he was waiting for his bodyguards at the garage. Alexandra Taxi Association’s Sibusiso Zwane and provincial public relations officer Graham Fritz later confirmed the identity of the victim as Ntshangase.

Tshetlhane said the motive for the killing had not yet been established, and that investigations were underway to trace and apprehend the suspects responsible. In a statement, released on Tuesday, Santaco Gauteng said it had received the news with profound shock and deep sadness. The organisation strongly condemned the killing, calling it a senseless act of violence, and appealed to the South African Police Service to conduct a thorough and urgent investigation to arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.

Furthermore, it revealed that Ntshangase held several leadership positions within the taxi industry, including head of conflict resolution within the greater Johannesburg region and grievance officer of the Alexandra Taxi Association. “His unwavering commitment to resolving disputes, promoting discipline, and fostering unity earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and stakeholders across the industry.

“His passing represents a tremendous loss to Santaco Gauteng and the broader public transport industry. His courage, leadership, and dedication to advancing the interests of the taxi industry have left a lasting legacy that will be remembered with gratitude and respect.”
