MC Weiler’s container library poised for top award

ALEXANDRA - MC Weiler Primary School's Seed Library which was constructed in 2010 is poised for a top architectural award.

Alexandra’s MC Weiler Primary School Seed Library which was constructed in 2010 is poised for a top architectural award.

Designed by Architects of Justice, this Seed (Supplementary Extended Education Device) Library is a semi-permanent building in the courtyard of the school designed for a place such as Alexandra where land and space are an issue.

The design uses two shipping containers stacked perpendicularly to form a cross-shaped plan. The ground floor houses the books, while the upper floor is used for reading and study rooms. The upper floor also has a deck used for outdoor reading and is used as a stage for school assemblies.

The shipping containers were chosen for their ease of transportation and their sustainable green benefits.

The modular construction method meant that the library could be put up in four months. It is one of 15 of South Africa’s top sustainable architectural projects which are in the running for the third bi-annual AfriSam-SAIA (South African Institute of Architects) Award for Sustainable Architecture which takes place in October.

The award recognises buildings that are the result of an integrated approach to architecture, natural systems and technology. The nominated projects make a positive contribution to their communities and reduce environmental impacts through strategies such as the reuse of existing structures, connection to transit systems, low-impact and regenerative site development, energy and water conservation, and the use of sustainable or renewable construction materials.

AfriSam’s CEO Stephan Olivier described architects as influential authorities in shaping the future of design and consumer choices. The nominated projects show that green and sustainable designs, which make a difference to the environment as well as to those who work or live within the buildings, are also aesthetically appealing, he said.

“We are delighted that one of the entries comes form of a cost-effective Seed Library in Alexandra by the Architects of Justice which can be replicated throughout the country,” said SAIA president Sindile Ngonyama.
