Stand aside Banyana Banyana goal minder Thoko Mndaweni, here comes Sacred Heart College’s Mbali Khumalo.

Khumalo, whose first names means beautiful flower in IsiZulu, has been named JVW Goal Keeper of the Year at the inaugural JVW Awards which were hosted on 13 November by the ladies football club of current Banyana skipper, Janine van Wyk.

Van Wyk owns a girls football development team which goes under her initials of JVW Girls Football Club. The club seeks to develop the footballing talents of young South African girls and nurture this talent into the fold of Banyana Banyana, where she [van Wyk] currently plays.

JVW Girls Football Club hosted its first awards evening on 13 November to honour the growth and development of girls football in the country. There were over 500 players and parents present on the night to witness the awards ceremony.

Peter Augustin, head of sport and physical education at Sacred Heart College, congratulated Khumalo for her exploits, saying it was an outstanding achievement in a tough competition with more than 1 500 players from various development sides and schools taking part.

“I am grateful for my team at Sacred Heart College, and I credit my success to them,” said Khumalo, a Grade 11 pupil who has a thriving football career ahead of her.
