Hard work, dedication and self discipline are the hallmarks for success.
This is according to Kwabhekilanga Secondary School matriculant Andile Nkabinde (18) who obtained four distinctions in the matric examinations.
Nkabinde has his sights set on aeronautical engineering because of his passion to discover how and why heavy objects can float in space. Wits is his planned home for the next couple of years. “It’s [Wits] one of the best nationally and internationally in this field of study,” said Nkabinde who obtained distinctions in mathematics, physical science, life sciences and life orientation.
From a family of eight, he said social and economic adversities at home had denied his elder siblings from progressing beyond matric. “My achievement is testimony that adversities can be overcome with commitment.” He credited his success to the selfless support of teachers who gave of their free time on Saturdays and Sundays, and school holidays to give pupils extra tutorials.
“I and my friends exploited this free resource to the utmost as we could not afford private tutorials. The good results derive from their [teachers] support, sacrifice, and from our dedication and discipline to schoolwork through out the year.”
Principal Jubera Selowa described Nkabinde as a rounded and complete pupil. “He prepared for hard work from day one and was dedicated to his work throughout the year by setting up a study group that adhered to its study programme religiously, and was not afraid of challenges or to seek help where necessary,” he said.
Nkabinde said if he succeeded in his endeavour, he would still keep in touch with youths from Alexandra to encourage them to commit to education and make a difference in theirs and others’ lives.
