Alex child desperate for a school

ALEXANDRA - An Alex mother was this week still struggling with enrolling her child at one of the schools three weeks into the first term.

An Alex mother was still struggling to enrol her child at one of the local schools three weeks into the first term.

The single mother who wanted to remain anonymous said she had registered her child for Grade 1 in August last year at Dr Knack Primary School. To her surprise when she took her child to the school for the first day of the term, the school’s management said they could not admit her child as the school was full. She said repeated attempts to get her child admitted failed, even when she presented the school’s management with a referral letter from the Joburg East District office recommending her child’s enrolment.

“Most times I took my child in full school uniform only for her to cry and be repeatedly traumatised when told she could not remain at school,” said the mother.

When asked by Alex News about the matter, the school’s principal John Shai referred any queries to district officials based at Iphuteng Primary School. The officials declined to comment.

Alex has 13 primary and five secondary schools which development organisations say are inadequate for children drawn from the township’s population which is said to be more than 600 000.
