Pupils from Alex High School in Alexandra were exposed to career opportunities in the automotive industry at Ford’s Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria.

The interactive careers day highlights a wide range of careers within the global Ford network and associated fields of study. Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa hosted its annual Ford Careers Day for the Grade 11 pupils.

A total of 80 pupils from Alexandra and Pretoria were hosted at the Silverton plant, including a further 40 from schools in Port Elizabeth that attended the programme at the Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

The careers day detailed the subjects that apply to the relevant fields of study, along with the tertiary education options and qualifications required for entering a particular field. “The programme is an integral part of our focus on education and corporate social investment,” said Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa president and CEO, Jeff Nemeth.

“Ford is committed to the country and the African continent as a whole, and we actively promote and participate in projects that empower our communities, and the youth in particular.”

The jam-packed programme included presentations from all the various departments at Ford, including manufacturing, purchasing, human resources, finance, marketing, customer services and product development. The pupils were also treated to tours through the two production facilities to view the vehicles and engines being manufactured and assembled onsite.
