Students praise ORT study programme

ALEXANDRA - Youth attending NPO, ORT SA’s Second Chance education programme have vowed to achieve their career aspirations after passing their matric supplementary studies this year.

Education and training organisation ORT SA has given a second chance to some pupils who did not fare too well in their matric exams last year.

ORT SA selected sixty matriculants mathematics to attend the organisation’s Second Chance education programme. These pupils had been unable to further their studies due to low pass marks in physical science and mathematics. The pupils blamed their poor results on large classes and poor teaching, and vowed to attain better marks in supplementary exams in the two subjects.

ORT SA’s Debbie Lurie said stringent criteria was used to select the pupils which included discipline, motivation, commitment and punctuality. The programme is conducted in two groups at Thusong Youth Centre by experienced teachers under the organisation’s teacher improvement programme. Pupils are provided with the required education material, and placed in small classes to optimise teacher-pupil interaction, supervision and support.

Tsholofelo Sebotha, the mathematics teacher on the programme said her task was made easier because the pupils were co-operative, focused, punctual and understood that this was a wonderful opportunity to improve their marks.
