A school in Alex has shown how to utilise limited space in the interest of its pupils.
In a partnership with private company MPact, Zenzeleni Primary School has developed a garden project which will complement the school’s feeding programme.
Teacher, Nezwindini Nechimboni said when something of value was offered to one in need, one should grab it as it may never come again. “Albeit a small space, we accepted the offer of a drip irrigation system [from MPact] for the garden to complement the school feeding through vegetable production that uses a method which also saves water and promotes awareness of the importance of conservation among children,” he said.
“This came along with a [worm farm] which produces manure from decomposing food and other waste from the school’s feeding programme.” Nechimboni added that producing their own manure would save them money, while the garden provided a more balanced diet for the pupils by growing spinach, beetroot, onion, cabbage, cauliflower, and herbs such as garlic and lavender.
He stressed that the benefits of this partnership should urge the city council and the department of education to provide schools more ground to grow their own vegetables.
