Man dies during shootout between police and suspected hijackers

ALEXANDRA - A man was shot at and died during a shootout between police and suspected hijackers.

A 27-year-old man died during a shootout between police and suspected hijackers on Wednesday.

According to Captain Allie Kodisang, spokesperson for the Alexandra Police Station, the incident happened on the corner of Lenin and Thoko Mngoma streets in Far East Bank.

“Police were chasing a hijacked motor vehicle along Lenin road and a shootout ensued between the police and the suspects. Unfortunately a bystander was fatally wounded during the exchange of fire,” Kodisang said.

He said a firearm belonging to the suspected hijackers has been found after they fled the scene.

“We have taken the firearm for forensic examination so that we can find out who it belongs to and if it is linked to previous crimes.”

Kodisang further added that the car in which the men were driving was found abandoned at the nearby Botlhabela Village.

According to reports, one man was arrested and three others got away, but Kodisang could not verify the reports.

The slain man has been identified as Sizwe Mbokazi, Ward 105 ANC activist.
