Christmas comes early for Alex Aftercare children

Children from the Alex Aftercare centre had a blast of a Christmas party on November 24.

Christmas arrived early this year at the Alexandra Aftercare as the children enjoyed their annual Christmas party on November 24 ahead of the school holidays.

The aftercare is run by the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) in Johannesburg and the children, aged 6-17, prepared for weeks for their concert which included dancing, reading poems, and a spelling bee.

All of this was choreographed by the head of the aftercare programme Lydia Makhoba and the children themselves. The aftercare, based at the Lutheran Church on 3rd Avenue, has been running for many years and offers a safe space for children who receive lunch, homework supervision, and fun arts and crafts activities.

Parents were invited to attend the party to watch their children perform as well as elders from the Lutheran Church. Some children were given certificates for consistently doing homework, helping others with homework, being well-behaved toward fellow children and supervisors, and volunteering.

Notwithstanding intense heat and load-shedding, the children had a blast and were treated to lunch, drinks, cupcakes, and sweets all thanks to incredible sponsors, said the UJW office and projects manager Vanessa Weltman.
