Its all systems go for Alex’s Human Rights Day race
Run Alex urges race enthusiasts from all over to come and explore Alex on foot and be part of the amazing moment in the township.

All systems go for the inaugural official race of the Run Alex Athletics Club that is happening on Human Rights Day on March 21.
The race has been sanctioned by Central Gauteng Athletics which is the controlling body of the sport in the province and this allows the club to host its first official race after years of the absence of road running in the township.
The format for the race will be a choice between running 5km and 10km on the day. A test run was held last year as more of a fun race that attracted 800 participants while the target for this year is 1 200 for the two races, with more than 600 athletes having signed up so far.
Run Alex co-founder and director for club juniors Siphiwe Nkosi said the race was a project that goes beyond social cohesion but an effort to prevent Alexandra from becoming the forgotten township.
“Starting at Alexandra Plaza, we take you through almost all the streets of Alex. Along the route you will pass many places of worship that held the township together during difficult times, and many places of entertainment that have over the years drawn many first-time visitors to Alex,” said Nkosi.
He added the club has made the race a 50/50 split to accommodate people from Alexandra and those from outside who want to experience the township.
Run Alex has attracted several sponsors who have come on board to support the race and brought much-needed funding. “There are many prize categories that will allow people of different ages to compete for their prize category.”
For the 10km race, the winner of the men’s and women’s races will get R2 000 and a pair of Adidas running shoes, the runners-up will get R1 500, and third place will get R1 000. For the 5km race, the winners will get Adidas running shoes.
Interested athletes may register on the online platform until March 14 or visit the Alexandra Plaza from 10:00 to 14:00.
