Hard work paid off for Thembelihle whose distinction in life orientation landed her in the top 1% list of learners who scored between 98–100% in the subject nationally. She also attained distinctions in business studies and English home language.
Thembelihle who unfortunately lost her mother at a young age, began her high school journey in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
She recalled needing to stay with friends, and friends’ family members to access Wi-Fi when schools had to offer learning online.

“Covid affected everyone, and I didn’t have internet at home so a friend asked their mom if I could go and stay with them at the time, just so that I could get school work done. It was supposed to be six weeks that turned into six months,” said Thembelihle. “I eventually went back to stay with my dad and a lot was going on at his house, too and that’s when I came to stay with my aunt, uncle and cousins where I’ve been staying since.”
Thembelihle said she didn’t apply any particular formula to doing so well in matric, opting to rely on her faith in God, applying advice from her teachers and peers, and putting in the hard work. Although her plans for 2025 are yet to be set into stone, Thembelihle intends to study towards a BCom at the University of the Western Cape.
She declared her desire to someday give back to the Alex community.
“I do wish to return and see where I would be able to help through initiatives that uplift both boys and girls. I hope to be able to run a sanitary pad drive in the future and charity drives in general because I know what it’s like not to have what other kids do. I’d also love to start initiatives around collecting books as well because literature, and literacy, are important as well. A lot of kids don’t know how to read.”
Thembelihle also reflected on how growing up in Alex had shown her that not everyone gets to enjoy opportunities such as the ones she enjoyed.

Lungile Ncube
Lungile’s distinction isiZulu also earned her a spot in the top 1% list of learners who scored between 98–100% in the subject nationally.
She also bagged distinctions in mathematics, life sciences, and life orientation.
Lungile has decided to study for a Bachelor of Nursing at Wits University.
“Helping people’s my passion and this became reinforced when I took part in community service at Itlhokomeleng home for the aged and Safe Hub, as part of a life orientation project,” Lungile said. “We were required to do 20 hours, but I did 45 hours; those opportunities reaffirmed the ideas of empathy in me and of me helping people.”
Lungile resides with her grandmother, to whom she expressed sincere gratitude for having created a home environment suited to her learning.

“She’s been very supportive. I got to spend more time doing my schoolwork because she takes care of all the chores and everything.”
In terms of preparation for the success she accomplished in matric, Lungile said she went all-in, nearly suffering from burn-out.
“I experienced academic fatigue. I overworked myself, especially during prelims, which left me emotionally and physically strained. “Teachers cannot give us everything so we also need to go that extra mile and source more information where you can, and compare notes with peers.”
At the end of her studies, Lungile aspires to create and drive health awareness campaigns to inform the youth and community to better deal with common diseases.
“I’ll be able to offer first aid programmes to the schools around the community, and for community members wanting to be able to respond better in emergencies.”
